Most Favourite to Least Favourite Games (1-10)

These are my most favourite games to least favourite games, 1 being the best and 10 being the worst.

1.       The Last of Us

“The Last of Us” is a story driven, photo realistic and apocalyptic survival game for the PS3 and remastered version on the PS4. A man named Joel loses his daughter at the beginning of the apocalypse and grieves about her for the next 20 years. One day, a group calling themselves the Fireflies, ask him to take a 14 year old girl named Ellie to their camp to help get a cure for the virus “Cordyceps.” Joel takes Ellie on a yearlong journey, only to end up not getting the cure. The entire game features events, which most are extremely unrealistic, as they somehow manage to kill anyone that gets in their way, like 76 people who live in one city. But other than that part of the game, the characters are well written and we understand what they have been through since the apocalypse started. The zombie’s, otherwise known as in four stages, Runners, Stalkers, Clickers and Bloaters, in that order. As you go through the game, you realise that the zombie’s aren’t the only threat as many men along the way try and kill the pair. As the game carries on, we start to make an emotional attachment to the characters as we see their troubles along the way, such as Joel thinking about his daughter and how much Ellie reminds him of her., or the way that Ellie seems distant from Joel, even though they have spent more or less every second with each other for the past year. The ending of the game didn’t really satisfy people, but it was a good way to end the story at that point. The ending does give away the possibility of a sequel, but even if there isn’t one, we can still assume that everything turns out alright for them, with a few troubles ahead.

2.       Heavy Rain

“Heavy Rain” is a story driven, choose your own adventure, photo realistic drama game for the PS3. The game lets you play as 4 different characters, Ethan Mars, Maddison Paige, Scott Shelby and Norman Jayden. The game mainly focuses on Ethan, am man who loses his eldest son at the beginning of the game. Then, his second son, Sean, gets kidnapped by a man nicknamed the “Origami Killer.” The Origami Killer puts Ethan through a series of tests to see if he is a loyal father who really loves his son. Somewhere, throughout the game, he meets Maddison Paige, a women who suffers from insomnia when she sleeps in her own home. She then decides to help Ethan find his son and gets into even more trouble than Ethan does. Norman Jayden is an FBI agent who has some weird, futuristic sunglasses which can help him document clues he has found, track down where people may be, and even play with a ball and throw it against an animated wall. Scott Shelby, a private investigator “hired” to investigate the parents of the victims of the Origami Killer. Lauren Winters decides to help Scott Shelby in his efforts to find the Origami Killer, but things turn upside down when an extreme plot twist that ruins your interpretation of a particular character who turns out to be the Origami Killer. There are several different endings to Heavy Rain, which most people enjoy, but a lot of the time, people don’t get the ending that they would prefer. But it does make people want to play it again to see what else could have happened if things went differently.

3.       Her Story

“Her Story” is a story driven, photo realistic game for the PC, IOS and OS X. “Her Story” is a unique game where you play an unknown person (at first), watching video clips of a woman telling her story to detectives investigating the murder of her husband. At first this game seems to be straight forward, but then, as you dig deeper into the game, you find out much darker subjects that this woman has gone through. The game mechanic is also pretty unique, as you have to type in a search engine a word that you have come across in particular video clips, which ranges from 3 seconds to 2 minutes, watch the first 5 videos in chronological order and use different words to find the missing videos you are unable to watch. The actress, Viva Seifert does a very good job at delivering a good performance, and making the game worth playing until the end. I can see why some people might not think this is very exciting as it is basically just watching a woman talk in a few video clips, but also forget that some games don’t even let you do any gameplay half the time. But “Her Story” does a good job at making you think about what you are trying to find out, and the story alone can draw you in pretty quickly.

4.       The Walking Dead: Season One

“The Walking Dead: Season One” by TellTale Games, is an extremely story driven, Cel Shaded, choose your own adventure game for Android, iOS, PC, PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. This game is a great game, and not only because it has won over 80 Game of the year awards. “The Walking Dead” gives you the control of a 38 year old man named Lee, a man who has recently been convicted for the murder of the man who was sleeping with his wife. When the apocalypse occurs, Lee is brought into the presence of a little girl named Clementine, a girl who doesn’t know where her parents are. In 5 episodes, Lee and Clementine go on an adventure where they have to overcome death of those around them, escape from psychopaths and cannibals. This game has moments which can make you laugh, but the game can really be heart-breaking, with the deaths of major characters and having to choose out of two people who you should save and who you let die. What makes this game so interesting is how the game changes based on your actions, and how a character changes their attitude towards you.

5.       Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom

“Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom” is an adventure, action, story driven game for the PS2, Xbox and GCN, where you play, obviously, Spongebob Squarepant, and his friends, Patrick Star and Sandy Cheeks. Plankton wants to find a way to steal the Krabby Patty formula, but as most of Plankton’s plans, it doesn’t go to plan when the robots he creates don’t follow any of his orders and become reckless. It is up to Spongebob and his friends to take back Bikini Bottom from the robots. What is very good about this game is the comedy elements that we all know and love from the TV series, and the familiar locations we have seen before. Even though this is a child’s game, some of the obstacles in the game can be quite difficult, but after a while, you should be able to accomplish your goal. The obstacles include boxes/crates with spike that when you touch them takes away a life. A good element in this game is that after every major boss in the game and the beginning, you are given golden underwear to give you one extra life, and for collectibles, there are “shiny objects” and golden spatulas. You can also talk to all the characters you have come to know throughout the years and have funny conversation with them.

6.       Beyond: Two Souls

“Beyond: Two Souls” is a story driven, choose your own adventure, action and adventure game for the PS3. Follow the path of Jodie Holmes, a girl with an entity that has been attached to her since the day she was born. Her story goes from the age of 8 to 23 years old, though, because she can’t recall which order each part is, we have to play the game through random parts of her life. At first what seems to be a confusing story about a girl with powers turns into such a heart-breaking story when we find out that Jodie has been under government testing at the beginning of her story. A feature that does help in the game is that you can’t die during gameplay, no matter what you choose to do, you can’t die, but you can get hurt badly. The entity attached to Jodie is called Aiden, who seems to have a sense of humour, though sometimes he becomes quite scary when people try to hurt Jodie. Throughout the game, it seems that Jodie hates Aiden, but, several times, she shows that she truly loves him. Some parts of the game can really bore you, and the worst part is that the boring parts are the longest part of the game, sure they come with a few little jump scares, but nothing to actually make you scream. And throughout the game you realise just much trouble Jodie has gotten herself into, and the game does bring to you some serious subjects.

7.       Life Is Strange

“Life is Strange” is a story driven, choose your own adventure, adventure and possibly a game that features a trigger warning for the PC, PS4, PS3, Xbox One and Xbox 360. This game, in the first episode, seemed to be a game purely only about finding a girl named Rachel that has been missing for a few months, and trying to avoid the upcoming apocalypse that the main character Maxine ‘Max’ Caulfield has foreseen. But the player chooses to dig deeper into the story behind the scenes of the first episode, you can see what is really happening to certain characters around you. As more episodes have been released, an even bigger event has been noticed, and it seems that Max has almost completely forgotten about the incoming apocalypse, and is focused solely on finding Rachel. The voice acting in the game is kind of out, such as there is no lip syncing, and the way that the lines are delivered could be more believable, but if you can overcome that flaw, then maybe you can see the good things, like what can happen to teenagers in schools. What made me like this game is how it kind of reminds me of the show “Degrassi,” and how it deals with teenage life and how terrifying it can all be. If you do consider playing this game, please know that this game features subjects such as suicide, kidnap, roofies and drugs etc.

8.       Until Dawn

“Until Dawn” is a story driven, choose your own adventure horror game for the PS4. This game has a very good story to it where you play 8 different characters, all with different personalities. What I like about this game is how, at the beginning, they make you hate a character so much, but then, as the game goes on, and if that person is still alive, then you can see their attitudes change. The story itself isn’t all too original as a lot of what happened to these characters, happen to those in classic horror films, except your action decide what who gets what treatment. The graphics in this game are very good, and the developers have done a really good job at making the characters look exactly like the actors, but sadly the acting, and even some of the writing could be improved. The game itself is great, but the decision on the actors was terrible as none of them could act believably, and also the fact that they don’t really look young is also a downer. The only concept that made this game somewhat good was the amount of decisions you can make and all the little jump scares that always gets you. Another thing is the facial expressions, some of them are way too extreme, especially the eyes and mouths, almost squinting and smiling when saying something, as seen at the beginning of the game.

9.       The Walking Dead: Season Two

“The Walking Dead: Season Two” is a story driven, adventure, action and is supposedly a choose your own adventure game for the PC, PS3, Xbox 360, iOS, PS Vita, PS4, Xbox One, Ouya and Android. When this game was released, everybody who had played the first season was excited that this series was continuing. Sadly, this game was a big disappointment as, unlike the previous season, none of your choices mattered, even though it claims to be a “choose your own adventure.” No matter what your choices are this season, nothing was changed, the same thing would happen with only one or two things being mentioned from previous episodes. Also, the fact that in this season we are forced to play Clementine, two years older than she was in the first season (now 11 years old) is very unlikely. All the adults in the game, which is more or less everyone, expects Clementine to do the “mature” thing and do everything they require. And all the events that occurred during this game made no sense, as the characters make a plan, and they don’t even go along with it. A lot of people say that this game is great, but there is hardly any gameplay, and decisions don’t even affect the story, and it confuses me at how this game is so popular as to even be nominated for Game of the Year award. The most unlikely thing that has happened in this game is that Clementine comes to meet an old friend from the previous season, even though it’s been at least two years since they last saw each other and they have both probably been around all of America and its connecting countries.

10.   Minecraft

“Minecraft” is a game that many people like to play, where you play with blocks of different things and attack other people. Killing animals and building wonderful places. Sadly I find this kind of boring and pointless. Whenever I have tried playing this game, I have always gotten bored after a few minutes, or I don’t get enough time to have any fun as people keep murdering each other when online. This game reminds me a lot like Roblox, but not as fun as because Roblox actually looks fun while Minecraft looks kind of bland unless you build everything yourself. It is very time consuming, but unless you make your own little game to play on it, it can be extremely boring to some people, but I can see why other people like to play it, you can play online with friends and build masterpieces with it. But sadly this is not the game for me.
